SO WHO IS THE MOST STYLISH IRISHWOMAN OF ALL TIME? I ASKED A PANEL OF FASHION EXPERTS TO PICK THEIR FAVOURITE....

MAUREEN O HARA

Alison Canavan: model and Mum
Having just met Maureen O'Hara recently I would say she tops my list. She's an amazing woman and always looks so elegant and classy. Even at 90 she is simply stunning. She has that extra something that you can't describe. That special ingredient that sets her apart, that 'je ne sais quoi'! Something so special that Hollywood and, indeed, the world adored her and still do. She fits right in with my other favourites Grace Kelly and Jackie O.I also love Amy Huberman's simple elegance. She always looks well and has her own individual style and knows what suits her. I love a woman who's comfortable in her own skin, who wears what suits them and doesn't follow every trend. I also love Morah Ryan’s style. She's fun and her look expresses her personality. She always looks great! From recent events like the races and the horse show Irish women have proved that they have an incredible sense of style and are very creative. I will say this though sometimes less is more.

ALI HEWSON

Laura Birmingham; beauty journalist, The Daily Mail.
"Fashion and style can go hand in hand for a few, for most they are worlds apart. For me, fashion means jumping on top of trends, style means learning about yourself, accepting what you've been given and maturing your wardrobe along with your age. A woman I admire hugely for her style is Ali Hewson. She is beautiful without trying too hard and dresses in a similar way. Her understated elegance is sophisticated yet relaxed, the way she dresses carries her from the most casual affair to a red carpet event and never appears to be the result of 4 hours of hair, make-up and a celebrity stylist. Despite what she could no doubt afford to wear, Ali Hewson dresses like a woman who knows her own mind, her own shape and her own style. And she
always looks comfortable with her image, money can't buy you that".

MAEVE BRENNAN

Sharon Beatty: owner of Dublin’s hippest boutique – Maven
Although not many people know about her, my favourite is Maeve Brennan .Maeve Brennan left the repressive and religious world of 1930's Dublin for New York, where she quickly rose through the male-dominated world of Manhattan's media. She worked for various publications including Harper's Bazaar but was best known for her "Talk of the Town" section in The New Yorker. Although she suffered a breakdown in later life, I like to think of her in her heyday - revered by the New York elite for her intelligence, wit, beauty and style. Glamorous and petite, she liked to wear black clothes; large sunglasses and a trademark slash of red lipstick. Generous and often extravagant beyond her means, she was known for her irrepressible sense of humour. If you look at any images of her from that period, you will be struck by her grace and expression of cool intelligence. I can imagine her smirking at the comparison, but she was a Carrie Bradshaw before her time. And a real one at that.

ANDREA CORR

Liz Greehy: editor of Stylebible.ie
Although she might not jump out to all as a style icon particularly, I have to admit to having had a major style crush on Dundalk beauty Andrea Corr during the late nineties and early noughties. I loved her edgy look which although fairly eclectic and diverse, was always very much ‘Andrea Corr’. Bar one or two pretty obvious red carpet mistakes, where she went ultimately too frilly or girly for her usual clean, sleek and often fierce fashion statements, she has always stood out to me as someone who was more than aware of her body shape, her height, her colouring and her personality and utilised them all together in just the right way.
Ultimately, it’s this kind of self awareness that makes great style icons. Her appeal was phenomenal and although she never tried particularly hard to be a pin up as such, she
most certainly was. To this day she has maintained an allure and a sex appeal that is very present but kind of hard to define.   Although her meringue style Vera Wang wedding dress was a surprise choice in terms of her usual style, it did look lovely on her and she seemed so open and happy in those photos that for once it kind of lifted the veil of mystery that had previously surrounded the Irish beauty.
