MENS FASHION: Key trends for summer 2011

Men's trends for summer 2011 feature fresh, bold prints and slimmer shapes .In men's fashion there are really two main areas: formal and casual dress. In other words, something you might wear to the office versus what you might wear at the weekend.

Still, whether you're looking for a new suit or an outfit to wear for a casual night out, sleek, stylish and sharp are the buzzwords for men's summer 2011. It's about trimming down and exploring your creative side by refreshing your look with bright colours, bold patterns and a slimmer version of the classics.
When it comes to men's dress wear there are the style trends to look for:

 Formal

 1. Sleek suits
Men's suits for 2011 are slim and trim. Jackets are cut a little shorter, falling around the hip area, they are tapered at the waist (not to be mistaken with cinched) and the lapels are thinner. Pants are cut to hug the thigh and taper ever so slightly as they fall towards the ankle.

2. Colours and patterns
Menswear also seems to have gotten interesting this year, with floral prints making their way into shirts and casual tees. Bright colours, checks and stripes are popular in the market. Men confident of carrying it off also have a range of clothes in pinks, purples and bright greens available.

3. Detailed dress shirts
Stylized dress shirts are a great way to add some personality to your wardrobe. Patterned shirts with contrasting fabrics on the inner collar, button area and cuffs allow you to ditch the tie while still maintaining your well-dressed look. Small checks and coloured gingham are also another nice option, especially when paired with a simple suit and a bold tie.

CASUAL

1. Must-have - shorts
Shorts in various lengths will be a hot item for summer. Designers have teamed them up with Havana shirts, printed Jamaican shirts and formal suits.

2. Eye-catching shirts
Think exotic flowers, bright, big plaid checks and interesting geometric prints. Another big style trend in casual dress shirts is mixing prints, pinstripes and checks, for example, or florals and gingham.

3. Trim-fit pants
Like the suit pant, casual pants are moving away from roomy to slim. For summer, opt for a slim-fit pant in cotton or linen.

4. Fashionable sport coats
The best way to pair a jacket with denim is to look for a sport coat that is less structured than a suit jacket. Sport coats with some detailing, like contrasting stitching, elbow patches and textured fabrics, look great with a nice pair of jeans.

5. Preppy
This year menswear has been given a super smart makeover. It's all crisp white this and smartly tailored that. No room for mucking it up. First up, it's all-American retro preppy. Translate as turned- up jeans, buttoned-up cardies and shirts - with a classic pair of shades, of course.
Finish with a bowling-style bag and one of this spring's must-haves, a straw trilby, to give the nautical vibe an edgier spin. And don't forget one of this season's top footwear trends - the loafer.
