Love is in the air so what better way to celebrate than with an outfit designed to set hearts a flutter? With Cupid's arrow ready to strike there's never been a better excuse to don your glad rags ready for that big night out. But along with the expectation of the most romantic day of the year comes a huge dilemma - what to wear? There are basic outfits that can function for a number of different date options.
Black tie ball
Planning to snag a man at a Valentine's ball or party? Then it's time to stand out from the crowd. Pick a vintage dress or a swooshy skirt, so you look different from the rows of little black dresses that will undoubtedly be on display, and update it with a slash of red lipstick if you really want to make an impact.
On a dinner date
For a romantic meal or cinema trip with someone you've been involved in for a long time, treat yourself to something new. The perfect thing to wear is a pretty, floaty dress - It's always fashionable and flattering, especially for curvy figures. Choose classic black or if you're feeling confident bolder prints, which will also help disguise the bits of your body you're less than happy with.
On a surprise date
If your date is a surprise and you've no idea where you're off it might be worth adapting your work outfit. Go for the sexy secretary look during the day, with a skirt, fitted top and heels. Before you leave, change your blouse into a jumper or cardigan in case you're off somewhere posh, and change your shoes into wedges or low heels, so that you look subtly sexy.
If you want to really make the outfit your own, add an accessory that means something to you: a vintage piece of jewelry that your grandmother gave to you, for example. It can also be used as a conversation starter if the date doesn't seem to pick up right away.
On a blind date
You've worked hard for the past couple of weeks to secure a hot date with Mr Right (now), and it would be a shame to ruin a romantic evening because your outfit of choice gives off a wrong impression. If you're meeting a new flame, you'll want to look gorgeous without appearing to have made too much of an effort.
Go for a favourite outfit that you know you look good in, something understated yet glamorous, like a pair of well-fitting and comfortable jeans, teamed with a pretty camisole. It's a simple, trendy look and you won't have to worry about holding your stomach in, or cutting back on food in case the buttons pop.
On a cinema date
If your date is an evening where you're sitting down, you don't want something that will crease easily or is uncomfortable, like a skirt. Or, if that's not really your thing - go for a pair of fitted trousers teamed with kitten heels and layer up your tops for a casual and cute look a camisole followed by a cardigan on top so that you're prepared if you decide to go to a bar afterwards.
