Essentials for a sunny mood; It's that time of the year when holidays abroad are looming and we are all busy wondering what to pack for a week in the sun. Here's a few of my suitcase essentials.

THE holiday's all paid for, you've scheduled an itinerary as long as your fake-tanned limbs and now your only headache is how to cram all the essentials in your suitcase. Packing for summer holidays should be easy with sun-filled days of relaxation on the horizon. But niggling doubts that you'll underpack and forget your underwear, or overpack and face astronomical baggage charges, are often in the back of our pre-holiday heads.Dragging a massive suitcase to the airport is no way to start a relaxing break, but that's how the majority of us begin our annual summer break. So, to make things a little easier, I’ve put together some top tips for choosing that perfect holiday wardrobe – whatever your destination.

                             THE CITY

Wandering the cobblestone streets of Rome, snapping photos from the top of the Eiffel Tower, or shopping on New York's Fifth Avenue can be unforgettable. But so can wearing the wrong clothes and getting all hot and sweaty, or shivering because of a breeze. Look chic and stylish with a pair of well-fitted trousers, lightweight skirt and flat ballet pumps, or slimline trainers. Casual and classic ensembles work best. Keep your look simple and blend in with the locals. Don't bring a heavy coat, instead a soft cashmere wrap to keep you warm, and instead of a bulky backpack, bring a small tote bag.

                               THE MED

With champagne lunches and alfresco dinners on the agenda, you need to look effortlessly chic. Bring fabrics that won't crease easily - and if they do hang them in the hotel bathroom while you have a shower and the steam will make the wrinkles drop out. A bikini or swimsuit that suits your shape and size is essential, as is a loose kaftan for covering up, a printed head scarf and over-sized sunglasses.

                               AFRICA

Safari adventures in humid temperatures demand stylish practicality from your wardrobe. Ideal outfits should include shorts - with vests and T-shirts in subtle shades such as khaki, white, brown and camel. Shoes have to be comfortable, and don't forget sunglasses, a hat and a bag for essentials like water and a camera. For evenings pick floaty dresses and tops, perhaps in linen, and complete your look with statement jewellery.

                MIDDLE EAST
Though temperatures are hot enough to sizzle the blood, it's still important to cover up to avoid unwanted attention. Some destinations like Dubai are very hot but require women to be covered, so you will be expected to cover your legs, shoulders and maybe your head. Crisp white linen trousers or jeans are another good holiday staple that will keep you cool during the day . T-shirts rather than strappy vests sit well with a long sleeved linen shirt or kaftan and don't a wide-brimmed hat and a pashmina for a quick cover up.

                                 COUNTRYSIDE RETREAT

If you think you can just relax and not have to bother when you're in the country, think again. You should be prepared for activities such as hiking and horse-riding, which means a pair of sturdy walking shoes are essential. Make sure you also pack a flattering pair of jeans or khakis, and light layers like T-shirts, long-sleeved tops and cardigans you can layer up when the weather gets cool. The best way to dress up an outfit in the evening is with accessories - so bring a pair of embellished shoes or some pretty earrings.

 PACKING TIPS:

COSMETICS

By now, most of us are aware that gels, liquids and pastes in your hand luggage must be placed in transparent, resealable plastic bags. There's also a new [euro]1 charge for two of these bags at the airport. You are allowed to carry one bag per person; every item contained in the bag must be under 100ml; the bag should close easily, and all of your beauty items must be contained within. Invest in a DIY mini travel set with empty pots, fill with your favourite products and, ta-dah, you have your own customised beauty takeaway kit!

FRAGRANCE

There's nothing worse than opening your suitcase to discover a spillage. Try to find mini samples of your favourite scent or, better still, switch to a roller ball that's smaller, more concentrated and will waft provocatively from pulse points in the heat

SUNCARE

Never skimp on the suncream, but if you're jetting off on a short-haul trip and don't want to take vats of SPF, check out the mini options available for sun protection, such as sachets, towelettes or miniatures
