FILMS have influenced fashion ever since Louise Brooks cut her hair into a bob and Greta Garbo shaved off her eyebrows. Now fashion is about to have a ballet moment with the smash hit movie Black Swan - the exquisitely dark flick, which has been nominated for FIVE Oscars. Natalie Portman stars in the unsettling drama as a dancer who begins to lose herself in delusion amid the pressures of preparing for the lead in "Swan Lake." Her performance is an attention-grabber, but so are the costumes, designed by the insider-favorite label Rodarte.
Fashion editors have now predicted a burst of ballet-inspired styles hitting shops in its wake. Tulle, taffeta and knife pleats were all over the spring/summer catwalks and nude shows no sign of budging as the colour du jour. The bun and ballet skirt have certainly made a comeback. Tutus have been tweaked and are now highly wearable (yes, really). Emanuel Ungaro and Marchesa showed adorable champagne hued, frothy, feather skirted versions. On the High Street, you can pick up a ruffled corset dress from Topshop and powder-puff coloured net tutu skirts at ASOS.
Colour-wise, black and white has high impact as well as embodying the spirit of innocence and the dark side that prevails throughout the film. Look for clothing with feathers, lace and tulle. If you are channeling your inner white swan, keep your look soft and delicate by finding clothing with small accents, such as beading or embroidery.
If the black swan is more your style, bring out major drama in pieces heavily adorned with these textures, such as full feathered skirts or lace dresses. So, when you're next swanning about, ruffle some feathers by adorning yourself with an ensemble piece that not only captures the theatrical mood of the film, but also shows that you're a lady of mayhem, melodrama and mystery.
