RACING SEASON; How to achieve thoroughbred style

The racing season is upon us and that can mean only one thing fabulous, glorious fashion. And while the thoroughbreds battle it out on the racecourse, Ireland's most stylish people will be busy competing for the coveted Best Dressed title  at Blossom Hill Ladies’ Day, which will take place at the Discover Ireland Dublin Horse Show, on Thursday, August 4th.

It's not only a thrilling affair for atmosphere and champions of the turf, but also an opportunity for ladies to dress up like glorious, exotic butterflies. The serious business of Ladies Day is about the clothes, the gossip and the fabulous prizes - this year the overall winner will walk away with a €10,000 - plus there will be prizes for highly commended outfits and specialist categories such as most creative hat and best dressed male.

Black-and-white outfits, in stripes, polka dots or nude tones, a reproving to be this seasons big fashion story, and anything in cobalt blue, tangerine or colour blocking is a good standout alternative. The dress code is tall hats, high heels and short skirts and lots of va va voom. The archetypal Ladies Day animal will be checking her reflection in a friends sunglasses. The best advice is to stick to timeless classics because there's just nothing worse than novelty dressing.

Footwear is the most important accessory get it wrong and you'll suffer a lot more than mere indignity! It needs the delicate balance between practicality, comfort and high fashion it's not a line easily trod, trust me, I know. Don't forget you are likely to be on your feet all day, unless you plan just to remain in the bar or restaurant.

Wedges are a non negotiable must for walking on grass, in stilettoes you'll sink down into the grass and wind up dragging half of Kildare around with you when you're trying to get into the winners enclosure. The amusing thing about the crowd at Punchestown is that many of these people wouldn't know the back of a horse from the front. Fashion, with plenty of socialising throw in, is their sport.
