Claire O'Connor made a grand entry into Irish Fashion on graduating from the Grafton Academy in 2001, receiving 2 Young Designer of the Year awards. Since then , this talented young designer has made her mark with her creativity and artful designs.Michelle Obama is a fan as well as a slew of other high profile celebrities. I caught up with Claire for a quick cuppa to find out what makes her tick...
GH: Do you work on your own or as part of a team? Currently I am on my own, but I have outsourced some of the work.
GH: In your earlier years, how did you decide that you eventually wanted to become a designer? I saw an article about John Galliano in Hello magazine when I was 9 years old. It blew me away and decided when I grow up I wanted to be just like him.
GH: Who is your inspiration / style icon? I can never get enough of Steven Meisel, Alexander Mcqueen, John Galliano, Madeline Vionnet.
GH: The recession has been particularly hard for many young fashion labels, how have you streamlined your business to make it more cost effective? I have designed a bridal collection, available at the Design Centre in addition to my ready to wear. Even though I have cut back in other areas of my business I have not compromised when it comes to fabrics, quality and good customer service.
GH: What's your favourite trend this season and which ones will you be avoiding? My favourite trend would have to be lace. I also love the ‘tough luxe’ trend, particularly Balenciaga’s take on it. I would not be a huge fan of the ‘cut-out’ trend. Although it is beautifully done at YSL and Lanvin, I think some fans of the look have gone to the extreme making it quite vulgar.
GH: What are you wearing today? (I am contemplating changing my clothes to answer this). If you really want to know , a little black cardigan, a t-shirt and my chloe jeans and the latest edition to my shoe collection. Quite boring really today!
GH: When you create something, what goes through your mind? I am always thinking of the bigger picture. Ultimately I am striving for the perfect collection, so each dress I design is a step towards achieving my dream.
GH: Does the preparation of a season's collection take time? Yes, it takes a lot of work before you get to the exciting part, and by the time you get to that stage it’s time to start working on the next collection.
GH: How do you intend women to feel when wearing your clothing ?I want them to feel happy in themselves and confident.
GH: What do you have to say to the next generation of fashion designers, particularly for those hoping to follow in your footsteps? It is incredibly difficult. I once met a very high profiled designer. He told me if he had his life over again he would do anything except fashion. I believe with some self-belief, in time the hard work and perseverance will pay off.
