Look dapper, be a flapper; Twenties-style fashion makes a return

Fashion seems to be forever looking over its shoulder. Whether it's the prim and proper looks of the 1950s or 70s Bohemia, there is so much vintage around at the moment, you could be forgiven for thinking you were trapped a time warp. But then as the adage goes, 'If it ain't broke, don’t fix it?' Take all the best that history has to offer, add a modern twist and hey presto! You’ve got a style that echoes the past while being bang up to date.

One of the most flattering of this spring’s trends goes back to the flappers of the Roaring Twenties, adding a contemporary play on ruffles and frills. This is largely thanks to the hit HBO show "Boardwalk Empire," the lavish, sexy and lovingly detailed 12-part series, which beat that other great period drama, Mad Men, to win Best Dramatic Series at the Golden Globe. Set in the 1920s, the show has already been praised for its exquisite costumes and style pundits predict the show will trigger a renewed interest in the style of the period.

The Roaring Twenties were known for newly liberated party girls who loved to engage in vices of every kind, the least of which was the penchant for accessorizing with long pearl necklaces, sequined small evening bags and cloches. Hemlines rose, hair was worn slicked back and cigarette holders completed the new found spirit of recklessness. It also marked the start of fashion becoming widely available. Previous styles demanded huge salaries, but if a woman could sew, she could make a straight shift dress. Simple patterns were introduced and the style flourished.

Today, the look has rode a comeback on the world's catwalk - the Chanel couture show looked to have a decided Twenties flavour -- drop waists, narrow dresses, lots of crepe. Now it's hit the high street. You'll find it makes a big impression at Monsoon, Marks & Spencer, Debenhams and teen favourite ASOS.Feminine, sexy and oh-so sassy, it's perfect for the woman who wants to show off her figure. The frilled dress is the key essential. Pretty yet sexy, chose bias cut that gently skims the body and proves flattering for all shapes and sizes. If you’re the kind of girl who can't resist an accessory, Twenties fashion is for you.

With sequins, beading and shine galore, it's also a sure winner on the party circuit. There's nothing minimal about this look, so overload with as many feathers, pearls, gloves, hats and headbands as you can find. A pair of sexy, high-heeled Mary Janes, first introduced as a mass manufactured product of the 1920s, completes the look.
